Weedbusters is an interagency initiative to raise New Zealanders’ awareness of the threat weeds pose to biodiversity, the economy and our health. Weedbusters supports individuals and groups to tackle their weeds. The agencies involved recognise that weed awareness is an essential component to successful weed management in New Zealand.
Weedbusters in New Zealand is based on the Australian model and was launched in 2003 by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Regional Councils and Unitary Authorities. It is supported in principle by other government and non-governmental organisations and Crown Research Institutes in the biosecurity and biodiversity sectors.
Weedbusters aims to improve weed awareness and strives to move people to adopt new behaviours to stop the spread of weeds, and to actively control weeds.
Our Vision
That all New Zealanders understand the impact of weeds on the environment, economy and human health in Aotearoa New Zealand and are motivated to take action to reduce their impact.
Our Goals
1. To increase public awareness of weeds and their impact
2. To empower community action in weed management
3. To share knowledge, skills and resources between weed practitioners (people who are involved in weeds)
