Profile
Castlecliff Coast Care is now in it’s 9th year of busting weeds on the dunes at Castlecliff Beach, Whanganui. We are a sub-group of Progress Castlecliff Inc. We remove Wattle, Boxthorn, and ground cover weeds on the rear dunes, and pink ragwort on both rear and fore dunes. The dunes are located on the seaward side of the Domain, one of Whanganui’s premier parks, and the children’s play area.
We plant about 700 native plants each winter, have for last 6 years, with community and especially school children’s help. We try to add educational aspects into every group’s visit and have a nature trail in the rear dunes for this purpose. We are also active during Sea Week, with other groups, eg Museum, Sarjeant Gallery, DoC and Horizons Regional Council staff. These combined efforts have attracted 300 to 500 children to the beach during Sea Week the last two years. Coast Care volunteers have also been regular attendees of the NZ Dune Restoration Trust’s annual conferences, which we find both enjoyable and educational.
