The national Weedbusters mascot, Woody Weed, is planning to ‘raid’ the Wanganui Blooming Artz Festival next weekend.
But there’s no need for concern. Acting National Weedbusters Coordinator, Carolyn Lewis, says Woody’s appearance in Wanganui is all in a good cause.
“Woody Weed has ‘jumped to our side’ to help fight other weeds in New Zealand, and to create more awareness of the problems our country faces because of invasive weeds that threaten our native habitats,” Ms Lewis says.
Woody’s appearance at the Blooming Artz Festival has been arranged with the Horizons Regional Council, which will focus some of its displays at the Festival on problem weeds in the Wanganui region.
Woody will be one of the star attractions at the Council’s marquee where information will be available on Horizon’s pest plant strategy.
Horizon’s spokesman Craig Davey says the Council will also offer a $50 garden centre voucher in an Artz Festival competition.
“We will draw from all the correct responses to correctly guess the names of the five pest plants we will have on display at our marquee,” Mr Davey says.
The Blooming Artz Festival – from Friday 23 September to Sunday 25 September - is the fourth celebration of garden and art to be held in Wanganui. In the past the biennial festival has attracted more than 10,000 people.
